DirectConnect Server Backup
Advances in technology and increasing Internet bandwidth have created a new landscape in data protection. It is now simple and cost effective to perform remote server backups over the Internet. DirectConnect for Servers (DCS) is a remote backup solution designed for backing up Microsoft Windows servers and the mission critical applications they run. Here are several of the key benefits to remote backups:
- No capital expenditures for either hardware or software
- Pay for what you need
- Data available from anywhere
- End to end encryption
- Disaster Recovery
NO CAPITAL EXPENDITURES
Remote backup is an extension to your current backup solution. However, unlike typical backup solutions—DCS is a service and requires no up-front investment.
PAY FOR WHAT YOU NEED
DirectPointe remote backup plans target the amount of storage you need rather than buying large amounts of storage in bulk. Predictable pricing makes accounting easy. However, if you have a sudden spike in the data that needs to be backed up, your data is backed up automatically.
Unlike most remote backup solutions, you only pay for the target amount backed up. For instance, if your server has 50GB of data to be backed up; 50GB is the target. Over the course of the month, DirectPointe will store your original target amount plus the amount that changes each day. Regardless of your change rate you will only pay for the target amount to be backed up.
DATA AVAILABLE FROM ANYWHERE
Data can be restored on the originating server or from any machine attached to the Internet. A problem at your office, perhaps an incident as simple as a gas leak, will not prevent you from accessing your data.
END TO END ENCRYPTION
All data is encrypted on the server and then SSL encrypted a second time before being transferred to our data center. Because the data was encrypted on the server before transport, the data remains encrypted at the data center. You have the option of setting your own encryption key, preventing anyone, including DirectPointe from decrypting your data.
DISASTER RECOVERY
Remote backup mitigates risk by having data stored in disparate locations. In the event of fire, flood, theft or other disaster, having backups stored remotely may save your business.
APPLICATION SUPPORT
DCS safely backs up MS Exchange, MS SQL and Active Directory. Additionally, any application that holds files in an open state may be backed up.
EASY RESTORE
While remote backups are not ideally suited to fast restorations of large blocks of data, they are much faster at restoring smaller amounts of data. With remote backups, you can often restore hundreds of MB’s of data in the time it takes to find and load your backup tape.
With DirectConnect for Servers files can be restored easily through My Computer, Windows Explorer or via Internet browsers. Selecting and restoring a specific file takes seconds.
ROTATING TAPES
Rotating backup tapes between physical locations is a hassle. As long as you receiving email or conduct business, the rotation of tapes seems to continue. Tapes wear out and visual inspection does little in guaranteeing tape usefulness. While tape backups are still a used in the industry, they remain error prone and difficult to manage. While remote backup does not completely replace the need for manual backups, it does provide an extra level of protection in the case of disaster recovery.
BANDWIDTH
DCS backs up only the portions of files that change so daily backups take very little time. Remote backups can be performed as frequently as every two hours. They can also be scheduled during off peak times, ensuring that backups do not impact users. DCS also has a throttling feature which allows backups to take place any time without impacting users or server performance.
RETENTION
Incremental backups are stored on a 30 day rotation making is easy to restore specific versions of files.
DEPLOYMENT
DCS is easy to setup. You can install it yourself or with the assistance of a DirectPointe engineer.
If your server contains large amounts of data, typically over 100GB, you can have your initial backup physically seeded. DirectPointe will send you a USB backup device which you fill and send back to complete the initial transfer. Once the data is in our data center, incremental backups will keep your data store updated.
